Palkhi festival showcases the distinctive feature of the Maharashtrian culture. This is a 1000-year-old tradition, which has been followed by the warkaris (people who follow the wari, a fundamental ritual). People perform collective singing, dancing, chanting (Dnyanba-Tukaram in what are called as Dindis or organised group of warkaris) to the holy town of Pandharpur in Hindu months of Ashadh (June-July) and Karthik (November-December). The Vari, which was started by Saints(संत), now has a different form.
The pilgrims known as “warkaris” starts the main pilgrimage from Dehu in Pune district on foot, carrying the palkhi(palanquin) of Saint Tukaram, a renowned devotee of Lord Vitthala, a form of lord Vishnu. It is known as Sant Tukaram’s palkhhi procession. It starts from Dehu & reaches Pandharpur via Aakurdi, Lonikalbhor, Yavat, Varvand, Baramati, Indapur, Akluj & Wakhri respectively.
The pilgrims start from Alandi in Pune district on foot, carrying the palkhhi (palanquin) of Sant Dnyaneshwar’s palkhi and reaches Pandharpur via Pune, Saswad, Jejuri, Lonand, Taradgaon, Phaltan, Natepute, Malshiras, Velapur, Shegaon & Wakhri to Pandharpur. Both the palkhis meet at Pune, then at Wakhari and then further meet just before Pandharpur.
Along with the Dindi (palkhi) procession, service (seva) to the poor and needy, like Amrut Kalash (annadana – donation of food), Narayan seva, medical help and building and repairing of rural infrastructure, is also done.
This year on 07/07/2018 (Saturday ), Sant Tukaram maharaj’s palakhi arrived at Pimpri-Chinchwad. Everybody had gone through the atmosphere of devotional environment. Many people donate different ways during the Ashadhi Vari. On same occasion, hats made by calligraphy are given by “K” Calligraphy as a Not too big, Somewhat short.
